DESCRIPTION:
EPW – Unsigned English, lever fusee, 56mm, silver OF original pair cased bearing Birmingham hallmarks for 1817, casemaker’s “WR“ marking in cameo, ivory colored enamel dial, KWKS, Savage two-pin lever escapement with D-shaped counterpoise, diamond endstone, gilt mvt, balance cock marked "Improv'd Patent" on table and "Escapement" on foot, gilt locking dust-cap, s#1383. Comes with small stack of papers in case, most being simple plain scraps or newspaper scraps but with one paper being for Metcalf & Stephenson Watchmakers and Jewelers of Ontario. A very rare early example of the Savage two-pin escapement. George Savage developed his lever escapement in about 1815 and emigrated to Canada in 1818 but this escapement continued in use into the 1860s. Mvt: GRO, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, abrasion at edge of main plate adjacent balance wheel, some patches of profuse small scratches at edge of main plate in other areas; dial has faint hl at 6 extending through seconds-register; excellent hands; original outer case shows light wear, some scratches to rear, small indent on bezel from bow, dent to left perimeter of rear, nick or small ding on rear shoulder at 3, fairly shallow dent on bezel at 6, good button latch though a bit stiff to open; original inner case shows light wear, circumferential dent, some denting to rear center, nick to rear shoulder at 12; bow pivots freely with side-to-side play along pin; domed glass bull's-eye crystal with scattered very short scratches.
